Similar to Asphalt, tar and chip is a combination of asphalt cement and gravel that is combined together to resurface driveways, parking lots and roads. This is called chip and seal. As chip and seal has been used for over 100 years it also provides a beautiful alternative to asphalt. Chip and seal is also available in a variety of shades that include brown, light grey, and red. Other benefits of the chip and seal method include cost, maintenance and traction. Chip and seal is approximately 50% cheaper than asphalt and is virtually maintenance free.
You may be asking yourself, what is the difference between chip and seal and other asphalt overlays, and the answer is actually very simple. The difference is in the construction method. Hot mix asphalt pavement is produced by heating liquid asphalt and mixing it with aggregate, with the mix then spreading and compacting the mixture to form a durable road structure and riding surface. |
| With chip and seal, a thin film of heated asphalt liquid is sprayed on the road surface and followed by the placement of small aggregates or "chips." The chips are then compacted for maximum adherence to the asphalt. The final step is to sweep the excess stone from the surface and your new driveway is ready!
